GRADY CHAMPION

Mississippi-based blues musician Grady Champion has been captivating audiences for the better part of two decades. The singer/harp player/guitarist/songwriter has often been compared to other revolutionary artists such as Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin’ Wolf and Junior Wells.
He was the 2010 winner of the International Blues Championship in Memphis. He’s become a favourite at the Chicago Blues Festival and the Legendary Blues Cruise.

Without a doubt the most incredible debut performance at the Shuffle belongs to the Ghost Town Blues Band. Fresh from a second place finish at the International Blues Challenge they made their first trip into Canada to perform at the Shuffle.
We had them return for a sold-out performance in the Spring and their electrifying stage presence once again thrilled Shuffle fans.
Since then they have been named as one of the top 5 blues bands touring America today.

Alexis P. Suter made her first appearance at the Canal Bank Shuffle last year and fans are still buzzing about the incredibly passionate, powerful and emotional performance she turned in.
Her music is thoroughly grounded in Gospel and there’s no denying the genuine emotion she infuses into her shows. Recognized among her peers as a stellar performer, Alexis and her band have opened for Bo Diddley, Dickey Bets, BB King, Coco Montoya, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Allen Touissaint, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Winter and many more.

The Shuffle is thrilled to welcome one of the great southern blues artists to Thorold – Johnny Rawls. He’s agreed to include us on his 2015 tours squeezing us in between Nashville and Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago.

Another of our off-season presentations, the Jeremiah Johnson band blew the crowd away with power, talent, and genuine warmth included in their explosive show. They were simply brilliant and Shuffle fans immediately deluged us with requests for his appearance at the festival. We were only too happy to oblige.

REVEREND RAVEN & THE CHAIN SMOKING ALTAR BOYS

This is the first appearance at the Shuffle for Chicago based Reverend Raven & the Chain Smoking Altar Boys, but we presented him earlier this year and the absolutely incredible performance had Shuffle fans demanding we bring him back for the festival.

There’s little need to describe Jack de Keyzer. He is the only artist to appear at al 14 Shuffles and that’s because he is everyone’s favourite and the most well known Canadian Blues artist touring today.
He is a Juno Winner and 7 time  Maple Blues Winner, known equally for his considerable talent as blues guitarist, singer, song writer and band leader.

Without a doubt one of the best Canadian  guitarists, singer and songwriters ever, David Gogo is making a much anticipated return to the Shuffle. Armed with a new monster CD, just released, this performance is sure to rank among his best. The consummate professional, Gogo has never failed to thrill Shuffle audiences. He tours the world constantly and has appeared with Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and George Thorogood to name a few.

The Shuffle is thrilled to add Cedric Burnside to the legends who have appeared at the Shuffle. With a deep, rich history of blues in the family, he’s sure to bring his authentic talent and passion to Thorold.
His bio explains: “Music and family came together for Cedric Burnside, a grandson of the famed hill country blues artist R. L. Burnside. Cedric became known for his high-spirited drumming in his grandfather’s band, which can be heard on albums such as “Burnside On Burnside” featuring R. L. Burnside and his band.”

Red Dirt Revelators

THE RED DIRT REVELATORS
The favourite adopted sons of Shuffle fans, RDR make their 5th appearance at the Shuffle. After competing in the finals of the International Blues Challenge, they first travelled to Canada (as WSNB) and quickly won over the Canadian audience with terrific musicianship, thought provoking lyrics, a great deal of humour and that famous Southern charm. Fans voted them most popular after their initial appearance and their numbers have grown since.

Another much anticipated debut will be the appearance by Cécile Doo-Kingue.

Another artist making their debut at the Shuffle is the Kirby Sewell Band.
The fast rising Canadian artist has been “known to break a sweat performing, commands the stage, sharing nuances of his own life in unforgettable vocal performances, leaving audiences little doubt that the Blues has spent some time with him.”
Sewell is backed by  an incredible band, who are currently on an International tour with their new album Girl With a New Tattoo and have made The Shuffle one of the stops on this tour.

MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN

Shuffle fans are in for a rare treat this year as we’re presenting a totally unique and outstanding show designed and produced by piano virtuoso and musical director Lance Anderson. The show features anAll Star cast recreating the world famous tour of Joe Cocker and  Leon Russell with Mad Dogs and Englishmen.
They don’t try to mimic the originals, they present the music with their own powerful personnas.

“Juno Award winning producer Lance Anderson (who brought The Last Waltz to Cobourg) has brought together another wonderful roster of BLUES ALL STARS. Singers Chuck Jackson (The Downchild Blues Band),  and Matt Weidinger (Lumberjunk), Cheryl Lescom and gospel sensations Quisha Wint and Selena Evangeline to recreate the magic of the award winning 1970’s tour, album and movie of the same name.”

Another first-time Shuffle performer is the Brent Johnson Band. Among those incredible Texas blues artists who are destined for greatness, his band is the type the Shuffle loves to present so our fans can say “I saw him when….”

In the wake of some health problems for talented and popular co-front man Johnny Mays, The Shuffle is delighted to welcome back Fathead. A perennial favourite, they missed last year and Shuffle fans missed them!
With two Juno Awards along with numerous other music industry trophies to their credit, FATHEAD has played the top blues rooms, concert halls and music festivals from coast to coast. Their sound is steeped heavily in the blues, married with elements of the best roots music, and possesses a unique ensemble sound that is immediately recognizable as their own.

Making his first appearance at the Shuffle, Michael Schatte (pronounced Shaw-tee) has been described as “A jaw-dropping electric guitarist. A literate and witty singer/songwriter. A virtuoso acoustic guitar soloist. A riveting live performer.”

Originally from Detroit, Morgan Davis has made Canada his home and Canadians have embraced him as one of their own. He is a veteran who is returning to the Shuffle after a few years away.
Davis has garnered far too many blues awards to list here but among them are Junos’, Maple Blues Awards as well as Blues artist of the year, songwriter of the year and the list goes on.

Another first appearance at the Canal Bank Shuffle, Conor Gains is sure to become a fan favourite. Starting at an early age, he has grown in talent and reputation at an extraodinary pace. One of the great Kitchener artists who  blossomed under the influence of the great Mel Brown, Gains has been performing at festivals from Montreal to Memphis.
Fresh off a standing ovation at the Montreal Jazz Festival and having opened for Burton Cummings, Gains and his band are poised to thrill the Shuffle crowd.

Krista Blondin is unique among Shuffle performers as she, along with Jack de Keyzer, have commanded a return engagement every year since their initial appearances.
This tribute show, unique among Shuffle presentations, features an incredible recreation of  the legendary Janis Joplin.

Hamilton native Harrison Kennedy has been touring steadily since his early days in Motown. Representing the Canal Bank Shuffle at the International Blues Challenge in 2011, he finished an incredible second place among the world’s finest solo performers. Since then his tour schedule has ramped up to include numerous appearances in Europe in addition to his solid North American schedule, racking up numerous awards along the way.

Al Lerman is no stranger to the Shuffle having appeared several times as co-front man to the popular Fathead.
But,  “Outside of the band, he has built a solid career touring as an acoustic solo blues/roots artist, accompanying himself on guitar and rack harmonica. He has released two critically acclaimed solo discs to date. ” He is among  Canada’s finest musicians in several areas including harp players, singers, songwriters and saxophonists.

A Canadian veteran who has been away from the Shuffle for too long, Michael Picket returns.
Becoming more and more recognized as a solo artist, Pickett also lead some of the premier Canadian blues bands – Whiskey Howl & Wooden Teeth, and now comes to the Shuffle with the Michael Pickett Band.
He is “an acknowledged harmonica virtuoso, Pickett has led, and performed with, roots/blues bands clearly recognized for their significant contribution to a venerable musical art-form.” B.Pulford

Local artist Brant Parker has become a favourite at the Shuffles and, each year, has proven he belongs among the world’s elite blues artists. In addition to his Maple Blues nominated CD River of Broken Dreams, Brant is keeping blues alive in Niagara all year long by hosting weekly shows at Donnelly’s Pub featuring award winning guests.
And he has represented Niagara well on the international stage and in the big shows. He  has shared the stage with stars such as Johnny Winter, Jeff Healey, Tony Bennett, Phish, and Jack de Keyzer, among others.

THE WATERSTREET BLUES BAND

Another of the great Kitchener bands, Waterstreet has a Niagara connection with Welland native Silvia Dee on vocals and keyboards. The band is a very tight group of friends including Rob Deyman – guitar and vocals, Paul Sapounzi – bass and vocals, harpist Pete Temple and drummer “Magic” Lukasiewicz. They have shared the stage with many legends including  Maria Muldaur, Big Dave McLean, Delta Moon, Marcia Ball and more.
Deyman’s position as Executive Director of the Kitchener blues festival has given him more insight into what blues fans want than most and his band delivers.

Another great band raising the profile of the local blues scene, the Pappy Johns Band are making their second appearance at the Shuffle.

Throughout the year, Donnelly’s Irish Pub in Thorold hosts blues – on the patio in the summer and in the newly renovated dining room all winter. One of the perpetual favourites is local blues band Dunn. And once again they’ve been chosen to close out the Shuffle by playing a Sunday gig at Donnellys. They are able to generate a smoking party atmosphere every time, and their previous appearances at the Shuffle had people talking about them long after it was over. The Shuffle committee is proud to have such great talent perched at our back door.
“Dunn is a 4 peice band that was formed in 2004 and have the ability to take you away from your life for a few hours, make you laugh, make you wanna dance and forget about what a week that you just had. In short, Dunn entertains.”

A genuine blues artist with all the ingredients to stand out among his peers, Alfie Smith returns to the Shuffle. To purists, there is no better acoustic performer than Alfie.

One of the Niagara area bands foremost in keeping this area the hottest bed for blues in Ontario. With blues becoming a favourite among Niagara clubs, you can thank Gatorbait for anchoring the base the genre has enjoyed here. Frontman Max Hillier is a top notch harp player and singer and has mentored the artists who have joined his band. They are perennial favourites at The Shuffle and will kick Club Capri off in the right direction Friday night when they open for The Red Dirt Revelators and the Ghost Town Blues Band.

Born an raised in the Niagara Region, singer/songwriter Blake Halladay brings his own bluesy folk rock flavour to storytelling. His original songs are a mix of real life and death experience and off the wall humour.  A passionate solo performer, Blake also brings countless classic cover tunes to share. Blake keeps the acoustic, intimate roots music alive at the Panini Cafe this year.


 

Spencer MacKenzie

SPENCER MACKENZIE

Jonny Lang, Joe Bonamassa, Quinn Sullivan – these are all names of blues superstars who wowed the crowds at a very young age. Such is the case with Spencer MacKenzie.  His guitar work is outstanding and his voice has the tone and inflection for which more seasoned veterans constantly strive.
And he’s developed a solid work ethic constantly touring the Golden Horseshoe and playing at every club featuring the blues. He’s jammed with some of the best already like Jack de Keyzer and Brant Parker. That habit will continue as he will join Brent Johnson on stage at the opening night kick-off.
He is an old soul trapped in a very young body. Come out and see him before he hits the world stage.
